Na statku žil statečný a pilný Hosař s rodinou. Hosař byl vysoký, štíhlý muž s širokými rameny a plnovousem. Měl zlatavé vlasy a vždy nosil fény a dobrou náladu s sebou. Jeho manželka, Půlnoc, byla drobnou ženou s tmavými vlasy a výřečným jazykem. Spolu měli dvě děti, třináctiletou dceru Kačenu a devítiletého syna Jendu.
